On 27 February 2019, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) held a training on migration and health for health professionals, law enforcement officers and social workers working at local level with migrants and refugees in Malta.

The full-day training which took place at the Academy for Disciplined Forces was organized under the tendered initiative TRAIN4M&H funded within the framework of the Third Health Programme of the EU (2014-2020) by the Directorate General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) of the European Commission, coordinated by GIZ in collaboration with IOM, the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), École des hautes études en santé publique (EHESP), The Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto (ISPUP), the Dipartimento di Sanità Pubblica e Malattie Infettive – Università Sapienza Roma and the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER).

The training aimed at enhancing the knowledge and building the capacities of front-line health professionals, law enforcement officers and social workers on topics such as intercultural competence, health needs, challenges and risks among migrants and refugees, mental health and psychosocial support, psychological first aid and vulnerabilities, and at thereby developing the competences of national professionals to provide more appropriate health care to migrants and refugees.
