IOM commends the decision regarding the disembarkation of MV Lifeline
Malta, (27/06/2018): International Organization for Migration (IOM) – the United Nations Migration Agency – commends the decision of the Government of Malta to allow for MV Lifeline to dock and for the 234 rescued migrants on board the ship to disembark in Malta. IOM also welcomes the immediate humanitarian assistance (including medical evacuations) provided by the Maltese authorities to the migrants, including the most vulnerable individuals, who were in need of aid, since MV lifeline had been stranded at sea for the past six days.

IOM appreciates the willingness of Italy, France, Portugal, Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg to act in the spirit of solidarity and to share the responsibility with Malta to find common durable solutions for the migrants after the disembarkation takes place, as well as to explore possible longer-term solutions, such as the opening of humanitarian corridors.

IOM Mission in Malta stands ready to support the Government of Malta, as needed, including through provision of direct assistance to migrants in need in accessing durable solutions, through integration measures, relocation to other European Union Member States and Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR).
