Relocation from Italy and Greece to Malta

The relocation of asylum seekers from Italy and Greece to Malta is a part of the European Union (EU) temporary emergency relocation scheme. The latter was established in two Council Decisions in September 2015, in which EU Member States committed to relocate 160,000 people from Italy and Greece by September 2017. The aim is to relocate 160,000 people in clear need of international protection from Member States under extreme pressure to other EU Member States.

Within the framework of the EU Relocation Programme, IOM assisted the Government of Malta in relocating 101 asylum seekers from Greece and 67 asylum seekers from Italy to Malta between 2016 and 2017. The beneficiaries were Syrian, Eritrean and Iraqi nationals.
