The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission in Malta is organizing a one-day international conference on enhancing cooperation between migrants’ host countries and countries of origin, which will take place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta, on Thursday, 11th June 2015, from 9:30 a.m. to 16:15 p.m.

The aim of the conference is to present the methodology, activities and outcomes of the project ‘Enhanced Cooperation between Malta and Migrants’ Countries of Origin. Lessons Learned and Sharing of Experience with Other European Countries’ (RF 2013-05) funded by the European Return Fund. The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the efforts of the Government of Malta to implement comprehensive return related policies through facilitating communication and networking between relevant authorities of host countries and their counterparts in countries of origin aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) process in all its dimensions.

The conference will discuss key aspects of the AVRR programmes in Malta and Belgium; services that are provided to AVRR returnees prior to departure and upon return to their countries of origin; advantages of AVRR programmes to host countries and to countries of origin; success stories of return/reintegration; recommendations on how to further improve the AVRR process; benefits of strengthening cooperation between host countries and countries of origin of AVRR returnees and suggestions how to further enhance it; as well as suggestions regarding approaches to be applied in the context of future projects.
