Our WorkAs the leading inter-governmental organization promoting humane and orderly migration, IOM plays a key role to support the achievement of the 2030 Agenda through different areas of intervention that connect both humanitarian assistance and sustainable development. Across Malta, IOM provides a comprehensive response to the humanitarian needs of migrants and aids in relocation and resettlement.

Relocation of persons with international protection from Malta to EU Member States and other countries
In 2009, IOM Malta participated in the relocation of refugees to France, Germany, Ireland, Lichtenstein, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands in accordance with bilateral agreements with respective receiving countries. In the period between 2010 and 2013, IOM Malta was also implementing the EU-funded ‘Pilot Project for Intra-EU Relocation ex-Malta (EUREMA, phases I and II)’ under which IOM was responsible for arrangements for interviewing and pre-departure procedures (including medical checks, travel arrangements and cultural orientation).
Total number of refugees relocated from Malta to other European countries since 2009: 598 (including 126 families).
Moreover, Between December 2011 and April 2013, according to the bilateral agreement with the government of Australia, 21 persons with international protection (including 3 families) were relocated from Malta to Australia. IOM Malta assisted in the operational and medical side.
